Anyway, we are into the christmas season now of work break ups and office parties and pretty much that time of year for over indulgence. Having an awareness of what is going into our mouths can go along way to cutting down on all those unnecessary calories. Just to break it down for you- Carbohydrates contain 4 calories per gram. Protein contains 4 calories per gram. Fat contains 9 calories per gram and wait for it Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram. For those who use kilojoules there are 4.2 kilojoules in 1 calorie.
So if you are thinking that by drinking alcohol you are avoiding the calories, think again The equations above don’t take into account the usual high sugar mixers contained in a lot of the modern day drinks. I’m not one to condone the use of alcohol but if you are going to have a drink and are being careful with your nutrition try having a soda water base with freshly squeezed lime of lemon juice and add your alcohol to that. And make sure you drink plenty of water as well. Remember EVERYTHING IN MODERATION. Don’t be too frightened by the calories in fat as long as they are the “good fats” and you watch portion control you will be on the right track.
I’m just listing below some punch you could try out over the christmas period. You should always put a hold on the alcohol if you’re driving. Stay safe 🙂
Pomegranate Punch:
- 2 ½ cups of Soda water
- 2 cups of Pomegranate Juice
- Lemon twists
Directions: Mix soda water and pomegranate juice in bowl and then garnish with lemon twists.
To add alcohol: add 2 cups of champagne, decrease both pomegranate juice & soda water to 1 cup each, and add ½ cup vodka. (Serves 6, 128 calories, 7 gr. carbs, 5 mg sodium, 72 Potassium).
